Getting Started |
The instructions in this FAQ use yoursite.com in examples. Replace yoursite.com with your domain name.
Non-profits that don't have their own domain name, however, will use youraccount.kics.bc.ca.
In this case, replace youraccount with your KICS Account name.
Please review these pages carefully. If you still can't find the information you need, request assistance by submitting a Support Ticket. |
KICS Server Specifications
| Server Operating System | |
The KICS server runs Ubuntu Linux, an open source operating system. Ubuntu is a commercially sponsored Debian-derived Linux distribution that focuses on usability, a regular 6-month release cycle, and open source software development. Ubuntu is also available in a workstation edition suitable for desktop and laptop use. |
|
| Mail Software | |
KICS uses Qmail because it is secure, fast, and flexible. Qmail is used by high-traffic mail services like Hotmail, Yahoo! mail, Red Hat Software, Network Solutions, and Ohio State University. Qmail's author, Daniel J. Bernstein, offers a cash reward to the first person to publicly report a verifiable security hole in the latest version. If you are interested in learning more about Qmail, you should also visit lifewithqmail.org and qmail.org. In May 2007, the KICS mail server was making about 22,000 deliveries per day. |
|
| Web Server Software | |
The KICS server runs on Apache, which has always been and continues to be the most popular web server software in the world. In May 2007, the KICS web server was handling about 300,000 requests per day. |
|
| DNS Software | |
DNS (Domain Name System) is handled by djbdns on the KICS server. Like qmail, djbdns security is guaranteed by a cash reward. See also djbdns.org. Our second name server, ns2.kics.bc.ca, is a separate machine which runs djbdns under Linux. In May 2007, ns1.kics.bc.ca was handling about 80,000 requests per day. |
|
| Other Software | |
For a complete list of installed software packages, log in using your SSH client and type " dpkg --list" at the $ prompt. If you require particular software on the server but you're not sure whether or not it is installed or running in your account you can inquire using our Support Ticket System. |
